PM+M is delighted to announce its title sponsorship of the Clayton Spring Classic Handicap cycle road race. The event, scheduled for 25 February, marks the 56th annual edition of this race, serving as the traditional Northern season opener.
Helen Clayton, managing partner at PM+M, said:, “As a natural extension of the PM+M Two-Wheeled Professionals Cycle Networking events hosted by our own Neil Welsh and Roger Phillips, and for a race with a rich pedigree, we are delighted to support this inclusive event.”
The Clayton Spring Classic Handicap, known for its challenging course spanning Clitheroe, Mitton, and Bashall Eaves, returns to its usual date on the last Sunday in February after being held later in the year for the past two editions. This early timing provides riders with a significant target after a full winter of training and preparation, transitioning from indoor Zwift sessions to the demanding terrain of the race route.
The race features a unique handicap format, with 80 riders divided into category-related groups. It’s an inclusive event for juniors, women and elite professionals, with each group competing over 16 laps of the 3.9-mile course, totalling approximately 60 miles.
Past winners of the Clayton Spring Classic Handicap include cyclists such as world champions and Olympic medallists. Notably, local legend Si Wilson, winner of the 2014 edition, will be among the participants for this year’s event, facing off against rising talents like Ben Wiggins.
PM+M’s sponsorship, alongside support from Burnley College/Fitness Evolution, ensures a generous prize list for all categories and lap prizes throughout the race. Additionally, full National Escort Group motorcycle marshal support and British Cycling Accredited Marshals guarantee a safe and well-organised event.
Neil Welsh, race organiser and former participant, expressed gratitude for PM+M’s support, and emphasised the importance of sustaining development opportunities for young regional talent. He said: “As the cycling community eagerly anticipates the 56th Clayton Spring Classic Handicap, PM+M’s commitment to supporting sporting excellence ensures a memorable and thrilling event for participants and spectators alike.”
